Salt (2010) Movie Review: A Thrilling Spy Film with a Twist
Salt Movie Plot Summary:
The film begins with Salt being tortured in a North Korean prison, where she is rescued by her boyfriend Mike Krause (August Diehl), an arachnologist. Two years later, Salt is working as a CIA interrogator in Washington, D.C., where she interviews a Russian defector named Orlov (Olbrychski), who claims that there is a secret program of Russian sleeper agents trained since childhood to infiltrate the American system and destroy it on a specific day, code-named “Day X”. He also reveals that the first target is the Russian president, who will be assassinated by one of the agents at the funeral of the U.S. vice president in New York City. The name of the assassin is Evelyn Salt.Salt denies the accusation and tries to contact Mike, but he has been kidnapped. She escapes from the CIA building and evades the pursuit of her colleagues Ted Winter (Schreiber) and Darryl Peabody (Ejiofor), who are unsure of her loyalty. She makes her way to New York, where she disguises herself and infiltrates the funeral. She kills the Russian president and escapes, confirming Orlov’s story. However, she also saves the U.S. president from another assassin, revealing that she is not a Russian agent, but a double agent working for the CIA.
She then meets Orlov, who tells her that he is her real father and that she was taken from him as a child and trained as a spy. He also tells her that Mike is dead and that there are more agents ready to execute the final phase of Day X, which involves launching nuclear missiles at Mecca and Tehran to start a global war. He gives her a necklace with a detonator and orders her to kill the U.S. president, who is being held hostage at the White House bunker. Salt refuses and kills Orlov and his men, but is captured by Winter, who reveals himself as another sleeper agent and the mastermind of Day X. He activates the necklace and triggers the launch of the missiles.
Salt escapes from Winter and manages to enter the bunker, where she fights him and disables the necklace. She then contacts a Russian agent named Chenkov (August Diehl), who is posing as a nuclear technician, and convinces him to abort the missile launch. She also frees the U.S. president and exposes Winter as a traitor. However, Peabody arrives and shoots Salt, believing that she is still a threat. Salt jumps into the river and escapes, while Peabody is reprimanded by the president for his mistake.
The film ends with Salt being hunted by both the CIA and the remaining sleeper agents, who are still loyal to Winter. She contacts Chenkov and asks him to help her find and kill them, while also promising to avenge Mike’s death.
